But for tech enthusiasts, a more powerful application is running your own VPN server on your home network. When you connect to it from your laptop or phone out in the world, your device acts as if it’s physically connected to your home Wi-Fi. You can access your server’s IP addresses, shared drives, and management panels just like you’re in the living room. The magic here is that only one single service—the VPN—needs to be exposed to the internet. You’re not opening individual doors for your file server, your security cameras, and your media app; you’re building one heavily fortified, single-entry tunnel that leads to the whole private network.

    I tried several paths to make this work. I first installed VPN software directly on my home server machine. This worked, but it felt clunky and tied my server’s stability to the VPN service.     It’s important to be clear about the limits. This is not a performance solution for hosting a public website or game server. Your home upload speed is the bottleneck for all remote access.
